Kinetic Concepts Inc (KCI, San Antonio, Tex) received the Joint Airworthiness Certification from the US Army and the US Air Force for its V.A.C.® Freedom wound care device. After an extensive evaluation process to test the device’s safety for use on military medical evacuation aircraft, the military can now use V.A.C. Freedom on the Air Force’s C-17, C-5, KC-135, C-130, KC-10, and Army’s military helicopters. Through this certification, Army and Air Force medical personnel are now authorized to use the KCI’s medical equipment in the air while treating injured soldiers. Those serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, or other locations will not have to suspend their treatment en route back to the United States.
