CARDIOVASCULAR BIOTHERAPEUTICS COMPLETES PHASE I WOUND HEALING TRIAL
CardioVascular BioTherapeutics Inc (Las Vegas, Nev) disclosed the completion of its Phase I wound healing clinical trial aimed at evaluating the safety and tolerability of the company’s protein-based drug candidate (CVBT-141B). This candidate is formulated with human fibroblasts growth factor-1 (FGF-1), in patients suffering from either diabetic or venous stasis ulcers.
FGF-1 was applied topically in 8 subjects at a single site and was well tolerated. According to the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons,15% of the estimated 20 million Americans afflicted with diabetes will develop a serious foot ulcer during their lifetime.A similar percentage of patients with chronic venous hypertension will also develop wounds.
FGF-1 offers the possibility of improved dermal ulcer healing by the promotion of new blood vessel growth (angiogenesis) in the wound bed resulting in enhanced development of granulation tissue and is able to fill wounds of almost any size.

THYMOSIN BETA-4 (Tβ-4) WOUND HEALING TECHNOLOGY RECEIVES US PATENT
RegeneRx Biopharmaceuticals Inc (Bethesda, Md) announced that a US patent designed for wound healing was issued through the US Patent and Trademark Office. The patent claims are based on a significant body of data developed by the National Institutes of Health and include numerous claims relating to thymosin beta 4 (Tβ-4), its analogues, related compounds, fragments, and other variants.

Tβ-4’s wound healing properties are the subject of 4 RegeneRx-sponsored Phase 2 clinical trials in chronic pressure ulcers, venous stasis ulcers, and epidermolysis bullosa.
