New Educational Campaign Launched for Apligraf® Organogenesis Inc (Canton, Mass) is launching a direct-to-consumer educational campaign for its living cell-based therapy, Apligraf®. Designed to treat venous leg ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers, Apligraf contains 2 layers of living cells that integrate into the wound and produce more than 40 substances, such as cytokines, that are important to healing. The campaign will highlight the medical advantages of bioactive wound products through Internet marketing, educational materials for patients, and point-of-purchase features. Additionally, the campaign will focus on contrasting traditional wound care treatments, such as ointments and gauze dressing, with living cell-based therapies. New Distribution Strategy Announced for SonicOne™ Debridement System Misonix Inc (Farmingdale, NY) announced that its agreement with Medline Industries Inc (Mundelein, Ill) for the domestic distribution of the SonicOne™ Ultrasonic Wound Debridement System has expired. The system consists of electromechanical components designed to ultrasonically fragment the necrotic tissue from the wound bed and non-migratory cells from the ulcer edge. The SonicOne’s probe tip provides irrigation that enables the tissue to be flushed from the site and improve the healing of the wound. Both companies now believe that the best opportunity for market success would be sales of SonicOne by Misonix through a proprietary distribution network. VitroGro® Approved for Human Trials Tissue Therapies Limited (Brisbane, Australia) has gained approval from the Trafalgar Ethics Board in Toronto, Canada to proceed with human clinical trials of VitroGro® for the treatment of diabetic and venous ulcers to begin later this month. The product is a complex of naturally occurring proteins that has been shown to stimulate the growth of human skin cells around nonhealing ulcers. Tissue Therapies Limited hopes to develop VitroGro to accelerate the healing of diabetic ulcers, which could result in a substantial reduction in amputations. Wound care expert Dr. Gary Sibbald will conduct the trial and the Study Monitor will be Dr. Douglas Queen. The Trafalgar Ethics Board approval follows the January 2008 notification from Health Canada that the formal regulatory classification of the product is a Class IV device and not as a pharmaceutical or a lower class device.
