UPDATE: Univ. of Miami's Efforts in Haiti—How You Can Help

(Dr. Robert Kirsner provided this update):

The University of Miami's "Hospital" remains fully functional with approximately 240 beds and 4 ORs, an ER, and an ICU. A recent report (March 11) in the NEJM highlights the initial efforts. While the logistics remain essentially unchanged from the perspective of supplies and volunteers, Project Medishare has taken the leadership role in administration and University
of Miami will continue, but in a supportive role. Our long-term goals are to train Haitian physicians, nurses, and therapists to carry on the wound care efforts. In the interim we continue to need all of your help and are thankful for your Herculean efforts to date.

Wound Care remains exceptional thanks to the wealth of supplies and the high quality of the volunteers. Nearly 200 healthcare professionals have contacted me and several have already had more than 1 tour of duty in Haiti. However, we have just announced new deployment dates to our wound care volunteer work force (see below) and we welcome all volunteers. Our UM Wound Effort continues as an international effort; trans-disciplinary and trans-organizational and is paying great dividends for people of Haiti. Volunteers' experiences have been described as "life-altering" and the volunteers are sharing the experience/advice/photos through a number of websites including Facebook and Google groups, among others.

For those in your organizations who haven't signed up yet — please get the word out. They would need to send the information below to me to set up deployment schedules and to register on the main website (homeland security requirement).

Please email the following to RKirsner@med.miami.edu:

Keep those supplies coming as well. Those supplies should be sent to the address below. It is helpful if we can receive a list of supplies delivered with manufacturer, catalog
number, description, unit, and quantity. Please note on the box that they are Wound Care Supplies.
