SAWC/WHS Survey Provides Insight Regarding Change in CMS Guidelines
DM Systems Inc (Evanston, Ill) recently released results from a survey conducted at the 2008 Symposium on Advanced Wound Care and Wound Healing Society Meeting (SAWC/WHS). A total of 153 professionals who visited the DM Systems booth completed the survey, which revealed how much the new CMS guidelines will change the way healthcare professionals think about and respond to heel pressure ulcers.

RF Technologies® Help Healthcare Providers Avoid Preventable Injuries
RF Technologies® (Brookfield, Wis) is partnering with healthcare providers throughout the country in an effort to assist with compliance of the new Medicare regulations that go into effect October 1, 2008. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) placed a mandate that healthcare providers will not be eligible for reimbursement of expenses related to preventable hospital injuries. CMS will also bar providers from directly billing patients for expenses related to such injuries.

Stem Cell Research Foundation’s First Grant Awarded to John D. Gearhart
The Stem Cell Research Foundation (SCRF), a program of the American Cell Therapy Research Foundation, has awarded its first research grant to John D. Gearhart, PhD, of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. The foundation was established in 2000 to help fund cutting-edge research in the new science. Dr. Gearhart and his coinvestigator, Michael J. Shamblott, PhD, also of Johns Hopkins, will be working with human pluripotent stem cells in an attempt to develop a hardier, more useful stem cell line

Bristol-Myers Squibb Sells ConvaTec Business Unit
Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (New York, NY) has signed an agreement to sell its ConvaTec (Princeton, NJ) business unit to Nordic Capital Fund VII (Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Helsinki) and Avista Capital Partners (New York, NY and Houston, Tex) for $4.1 billion.
The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals and delivery of the company’s audited 2007 financial statements. The closing is anticipated to take place the third quarter of 2008.
